DOJ’s cybercrime office warns vs latest text scams

The Department of Justice's Office of Cybercrime (DOJ-OCC) has warned the public against the latest text scams on job offerings.

“Be cautious before taking up an opportunity to work offered by unknown SMS (short message service) senders,” said the DOJ-OCC in its advisory issued Tuesday night, Nov. 23.

It said the senders of these text messages “will ask the applicant to pay for application or training fees and will promise high wages.”

The messages “would also require the applicant to answer an extensive personal information questionnaire that would then be used by the scammers to commit identity theft,” it said.

As the Christmas season draws near, the DOJ-OOC warned the public that they will encounter more similar scams.

“The holidays are a time for family and friends—but scammers will do everything to ruin celebrations,” it said.

“Avoid these unfortunate events from happening by being vigilant and conscientious with your online dealings. Do not click unverified links and do not give away personal information easily,” it added.
