18 out of 20 chosen private schools push through with pilot face-to-face classes on Nov. 22

A week after select public schools began holding pilot face-to-face classes, a limited number of private schools that offer basic education also started in-person classes on Monday, Nov. 22.

However, only 18 out of the 20 private schools identified by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Health (DOH) pushed through with the first day of pilot face-to-face classes.

This, after DepEd confirmed that two private schools included in the list -- Singapore School Clark and Xavier University Senior High School -- have deferred the implementation of limited face-to-face classes.

Citing Bureau of Curriculum Development Director Jocelyn Andaya, DepEd said that the “reason for both deferrals is due to the academic calendar.”

As announced by DepEd last week, there were 20 private schools chosen to join the pilot implementation of limited face-to-face classes for School Year (SY) 2021-2022.

Selected by the their respective regional offices, the 20 private schools that were allowed to hold pilot face-to-face classes include 100 Islands Cowboy Christian Learning Center and Our Saviour's Foundation (Region I); Mother of Good Counsel Seminary, Academica de Meridien and Singapore School Clark (Region III); St. Anthony's College, Oxmont Memorial Academy, Gamot Cogon Waldorf School Inc. (Region VI); Sisters of Mary Schools Inc. - Boystown, Notre Dame of Abuyog (SHS – TVL track), and Mt. Moriah Christian Academy (Region VII); Metro Dipolog Baptist Academy, Deor & Dune Academe of Technology (SHS – TVL track), St. Paul’s Institute of Technology (SHS – TVL track), and Xavier University Senior High School (SHS – TVL track) (Region IX); Ato Padada Christian School, BEST College of Polomolok (SHS- TVL track), Banga Evangelical Church Elementary School, Inc., Midsayap Montessori Centre, and New Moriah Adventist ES (Region XI).

Meanwhile, an orientation with the 20 private schools was held on Nov. 17. As explained by DepEd, there were 79 private schools nationwide that submitted to the Regional Offices (ROs) their expression of intent to participate in the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes this SY.

DepEd said that each region was requested to nominate a maximum of three private schools. There were 33 private schools that were nominated by 12 ROs to the DepEd Central Office.

Due to their alert level classification, DepEd said that there no private schools nominated in Region II, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and Region IV-B.

There were also no private schools recommended by Region IV-A based on its assessment of applications.

The 20 private schools that were selected came from the 33 that were nominated.

The 13 private schools that did not make it in the pilot run will be considered in the expansion phase.
