A total of 17,295 of 48,689 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in seven prison facilities of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has been vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Of those vaccinated, 4,173 had their full vaccinations while 13,122 had received their first dose, BuCor records as of last Nov. 9 showed.

Most of those vaccinated are detained at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City with 10,997 PDLs or more than 38 percent of the total prisoner population of 28,516.

But only 10 PDLs at NBP were fully vaccinated. They are those previously vaccinated before their transfer to NBP.

At the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, a total of 3,100 PDLs has been vaccinated or more than 92 percent of the total population of 3,360 inmates.

In other prison facilities, 600 PDLs have been vaccinated at the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro; 1,716 in San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City; 822 in Leyte Regional Prison; and 60 in Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte.

The same BuCor records showed that none of the 2.729 PDLs at the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan has been vaccinated as of Nov. 9. There was no explanation in the records.

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra had earlier directed BuCor Director General Gerald Q. Bantag to coordinate closely with local government units (LGUs) in the vaccination of PDLs.

Vaccinations of the PDLs are carried out jointly by BuCor and the LGUs where the prison facilities are located.
