Paul McCartney compares Beatles to Nirvana, own career to Dave Grohl on Hall of Fame induction speech

“Do you think this guy is stalking me?”

As scheduled Sir Paul McCartney, inducted the Foo Fighters to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last October 30, 2021.

In his prepared speech, the former Beatle compared his own career trajectory, from when he was a part of the Fab Four and to that time that he had to and start over again with his music career on his own.

McCartney mentioned how The Beatles and Nirvana changed the course of rock and roll (“we had a great time with our group”) and how both bands had their tragic end.

McCartney then drew parallels of his solo career to that of Grohl when the latter first formed the Foo Fighters more than two decades ago. Especially the part where the former makes his first album “where I play all the instruments myself.” Which is exactly what Grohl also did for the first Foo Fighters album right after the collapse of Nirvana.

McCartney also compared his own post-Beatles group to the Foo Fighters. “So me, I’m gonna name my new group, and I call them Wings. So Dave’s got the same problem, and he’s got to think of a name for the group, so he comes up with ‘Foo Fighters.’ So now the group is formed. It’s ready to take flight.”

“It’s Dave, Taylor (Hawkins), Nate (Mendel), Pat (Smear), Chris (Shiflett), and Rami (Jaffee) – all the members of the Foo Fighters. So here they are tonight. I was just saying to them in the dressing room, “Guys, this is it. You’re here in Cleveland, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And tonight, you’re gonna be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” said McCartney adding, “I mean It’s not just any Hall of Fame – it’s the f**king Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”

When it was his time for a speech, Dave Grohl said, “So I would like to say that the best thing about being here is being surrounded by our family. And when I say that, I mean, if anybody knows how the Foo Fighters work, the people that we are with and we’ve worked with, it’s been 20, 25, 30 years and we stick together like a family. And I think that’s important because then you’re doing it together, not just because it’s work, but because you love each other.”
