Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso was elected as Aksyon Demokratiko president, the party announced on Thursday.
Domagoso was elected during the party’s general membership meeting on Tuesday, August 10.
The meeting was attended by party co-founder Sonia Roco and Executive Vice-President and Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto.
Domagoso said it is a huge honor for him to be elected as the president of a party that has a genuine concern for the Filipino people.
The mayor added that he is happy that many of the goals of his local party, Asenso Manileno, and Aksyon Demokratiko are aligned.
“Pangunahin dito ang pagsusulong sa MBN o minimum basic needs: pabahay, trabaho, pagkain, edukasyon at kalusugan para sa ating kababayan (The main thing here is the pushing for MBN or minimum basic needs: housing, jobs, food, education, and health for our contrymen),” he said.
Aksyon Demokratiko’s newly elected Chairperson Ernest Ramel said the party saw Domagoso as someone “with a clean track record, tangible accomplishments, and a vision that the party shares.”
“We are confident that he will be able to help lead the party in its thrust to be a unifying force in an atmosphere of heavy political polarization,” said Ramel.
Ramel said that even before Domagoso joined the Aksyon Demokratiko, the Manila mayor and the party already had a “meeting of minds and hearts in many aspects.”
“We agreed on the COVID-19 response and providing jobs and livelihood at these times. We also agreed on the rule of law, focusing on education, housing, and health care. Aksyon is proud that Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso was elected party president,” he added.
Manila City Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan, meanwhile, was elected as the party’s Vice President for Internal Affairs.
Domagoso was supposed to take his oath as a member of the party last Aug. 5 but this was postponed because he needed to address the “chaos” in some vaccination sites in Manila.
Aksyon Demokratiko is a political party founded by the late Senator Raul Roco in 1997.
Prior to his becoming a member of the Aksyon Demokratiko, Domagoso was a member of the National unity Party (NUP) and served as its Vice Chairman for Political Affairs. The Manila mayor resigned from his NUP post on Aug. 4.
