Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said he believed that the Philippines will finally be freed from what he called the "Duterte curse" in 2022.

In a Facebook post, Trillanes said he learned to be an optimist when he was incarcerated for at least seven years for staging the unsuccessful 18-hour Oakwood mutiny against the Arroyo administration in 2003.
"In political circles, some say I'm the optimist. In a way, yes, I am," he said.
"or the whole seven years and five months that I was in jail, somehow, I always believed that one day, I would be free... as I firmly believe now that we will be free of the Duterte curse in 2022," he added.
Trillanes has accused President Duterte and his long-time aide Senator Bong Go of corruption worth P6.6 billion of public works contracts during his the President’s time as mayor of Davao City.
In response, the President said this week Trillanes was “all talk” and tasked Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo to deal with the former senator.
He likewise feared that the Philippines will implode if Trillanes becomes the next president, saying his staunchest critic was stupid.
“Kung yan ang mag-presidente, sasabog itong Pilipinas (The Philippines will implode if he will become president). It will not explode, it will implode,” he said.
According to the President, Trillanes has “illusions of grandeur” after the latter claimed of being the principal candidate of the opposition with Vice President Leni Robredo supposedly running as governor of Camarines Sur in the 2022 elections.
“You know si (this) Trillanes, I think he has– may (he has) illusions of grandeur,” Duterte said.
“Tignan mo? Wala namang ibang ano (See? There’s no other candidate?). Every candidate is always a ‘principal’ . Bobo talaga ang yawa (He is really stupid),” he added.
Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Jacinto Paras said Trillanes should drop his plans to seek a national post next year because Filipinos don’t consider him a serious candidate. Trillanes responded by saying the former legislator was "irrelevant" and "insignificant."
Trillanes has been open about his intention to run as either president or vice president and has accepted the nomination by opposition coalition 1Sambayan. He said he will only back down from plans to run as president should Robredo decide to run instead.
