Guevarra allows detained wife, son to attend mass for dead NBP inmate

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra (2)

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra has allowed the wife and son, who are both in jail, to attend mass and view the remains of Jesus Alegre who died last June 13 at the National Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

A mass and wake for Alegre was set today, June 18, at the National Cathedral of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente in Taft Avenue, Manila.

Guevarra granted the request made by Karapatan, an advocacy group for political prisoners, for Moreta, the wife, and Selman, the son, to attend the wake and mass.

Guevarra said he has instructed Justice Undersecretary Deo L. Marco, who has supervision over the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), to issue the order to the BuCor to bring Morita and Selman to the wake.

Karapatan claimed that Alegre was convicted on trumped-up charges together with his wife and son.

Alegre had been in jail for 16 years.
