Nineteen more inmates at the Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City were released last Friday, June 4.
In a statement, the CIW said that of those released, “nine were acquitted (of their criminal charges), nine on good conduct time allowance (GCTA), and one on parole.”
Last May, a total of 17 CIW inmates were released. Of those freed, one was granted parole, 10 were acquitted, and six on the expiration of their penalties based on GCTA.
The 19 inmates were freed after CIW Chief Corrections Technical Senior Superintendent Virginia S. Mangawit signed their certificates of discharge based on the order of Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Q. Bantag.
“The Bureau gave gratuity and transportation allowances to those released, and they were swab tested for COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) to ensure a safe return to their families,” the CIW said.
It commended the efforts of the Management, Screening, and Evaluation Committee (MSEC) and its document section “for quickly calculating and identifying qualified PDLs for Credit for Preventive Imprisonment (CPI) and GCTA during sentence serving under the new statute RA 10592 (Republic Act 10592 or the Act amending the Revised Penal Code).”
