Eight Filipino scientists have made it to Asian Scientist Magazine’s list of most outstanding researchers in Asia.
According to Singapore-based magazine, "the Asian Scientist 100 list celebrates the success of the region’s best and brightest, highlighting their achievements across a range of scientific disciplines.”
To be acknowledged on the Asian Scientist 100 list, the honouree must have received a national or international prize in the preceding year for his or her research, it said.
"Alternatively, he or she must have made a significant scientific discovery or provided leadership in academia or industry,” the magazine said.
Here is the list of awardees:
Dr. Annabelle V. Briones (Department of Science and Technology- Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI)

She was awarded the 2020 Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Applied Science Research for designing a mosquito ovicidal/larvicidal trap system aimed at reducing the incidence of dengue fever in the country.
Francis Aldrine Uy (Mapua University)

Uy received the 2020 David M. Consunji Award for Engineering Research for his engineering and innovation projects, including a sensor that monitors the structural integrity of buildings.
Desiree M. Hautea (University of the Philippines- Los Baños)

Hautea is the recipient of the 2020 Leads Agriculture Award by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology for her research into the adoption of the genetically modified Bt eggplant in the Philippines.
Sandra Teresa V. Navarra (University of Santo Tomas Hospital)

Navarra was conferred the Dr. Paulo C. Campos Award for Health Research by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology for her research on lupus.
Salvacion Gatchalian (Research Institute for Tropical Medicine Philippines Gatchalian)

Gatchalian was among the frontline doctors who died in the country last year in the fight against coronavirus disease (COVID-19). She was posthumously given the Dr. Lourdes Espiritu Campos Award for Public Health for her advocacy for tobacco control and the immunization of children.
Kathleen B. Aviso (De La Salle University)

Aviso got the 2020 Dr. Michael Purvis Award for Sustainability Research for her important contributions to environmental systems engineering as well as developing novel optimization models to guide national and global environmental decision making.
Edgardo G. Vazquez (Vazbuilt Technology)

Vazquez is known for inventing sturdy, prefabricated modular housing. He received the 2020 Ceferino Follosco Award for Product and Process Innovation.
Jonel Saludes (University of San Agustin)

Saludes is the awardee of the 2020 Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Science Research for his research into the chemical biology of natural products from organisms.
