AFP seeks IBP's help to educate personnel on human rights

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has asked the assistance of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in educating military personnel on issues involving human rights.

In a statement, the IBP said that the AFP’s Human Rights Office (AFPHRO), led by Col. Joel Alejandro S. Nacnac, held an online meeting with IBP President Domingo Egon Q. Cayosa last Friday, February 19.

“AFPHRO sought partnership with IBP in addressing human rights issues on the ground through IBP Chapters and in educating military personnel and communities on the salient points of Republic Act No. 9851 (International Humanitarian Law),” the IBP said.

For his part, Cayosa informed the AFPHRO that “IBP has greatly expanded the concept and reach of its free legal aid program and that human rights is one of the five focal areas of the enhanced IBP legal aid program.”

Cayosa assured the AFP that “IBP is open to partnerships with different sectors, institutions, and organizations so that by synergy it may be able to do more, better, faster.

He cited that the IBP has a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the AFP on lawyer security and justice.
