Pseudo NBI employee arrested inside bureau's headquarters in Manila
A man who posed as an employee of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been arrested inside the bureau’s headquarters in Manila and charged with robbery and extortion.
NBI Officer-in-Charge Director Eric B. Distor identified him as Mark Endaya Cabal from whom three heat-sealed plastic sachets containing shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) were seized during his arrest.
The NBI’s statement, however, did not state if Cabal was also charged with possession of illegal drugs.
The arrest was enforced based on a complaint of one of Cabal’s victims, the statement said.
The complainant recounted that he met the suspect outside the NBI Clearance Building wearing an NBI shirt which made him look like an employee of the bureau.
After the suspect offered to help in securing an NBI clearance, the complainant said Cabal told him that he (complainant) has a pending drug case with an arrest warrant.
“The subject (Cabal) threatened the complainant of arrest if he will not give P100,000,” the statement said.
After paying P40,000, the complainant said he decided to seek the help of the NBI after Cabal continued to demand P60,000 and threatened him with imprisonment or death.
“Upon verification, the NBI-SAU (Special Action Unit) also found that Subject Cabal has several complaints against him for Robbery/Extortion and Estafa,” the statement said.
“Subject Cabal was presented for Inquest proceedings before the Office of Prosecutors of Manila,” it added.
