'Batman Unburied': An original scripted podcast by David Goyer coming in 2021

And it’s going to be darker than his Dark Knight

With all the Batman news fluttering about, here’s another bit about the bat that’s worth looking forward to in 2021.

Warner Bros. and DC recently announced that it had tapped David Goyer to write an original script for a Batman podcast that would exclusively stream on Spotify some time next year.

Batman Unburied is an audio drama that, according to the announcement, will “explore the darker aspects of Bruce Wayne’s psychology.”

Fans familiar with the darker and grittier Batman comic book stories will definitely have an idea of what this means, and the choice of getting Goyer to be the writer and executive producer for this first original narrative from the Warner-DC-Spotify partnership is perfect.

“I’ve been a fan of narrative podcasts for some time and was looking for the right story—returning to Batman seems like the perfect opportunity,” Goyer said in a press release.

‘We’ll be using the unique advantages of audio to dig into the more nightmarish members of the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery.’

Goyer’s extensive work on superhero screenplays include those for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, the films that undoubtedly pumped fresh blood into the Batman title for modern audiences.

These films were dark, too, in a way that not very many of their contemporary superhero titles were. Fans can expect a grittier telling of Gotham’s darker corners from Goyer through a narrative that, from the little we know so far about Batman Unburied, would explore some of the darkest villains in the franchise.

“We’ll be using the unique advantages of audio to dig into the more nightmarish members of the Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery,” Goyer said. Batman isn’t at all lacking in the nightmarish villains department: the Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, and Professor Pyg come to mind, maybe even Victor Zsasz, Cornelius Stirk, and, of course, the Joker.

In other words, it’ll be more of a psychological horror-thriller compared to the Robert Pattinson film, which would take the detective thriller route. So you can add Goyer’s Batman Unburied to all the Dark Knight stories we’re getting in 2021.
