NBI detainee recovers from COVID-19

A detainee at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) headquarters in Manila has recovered from the deadly 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

NBI Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin said on Friday, July 10, the detainee underwent a second confirmatory polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test last weekend to determine if he still has the virus.

“Negative na siya (He tested negative),” the NBI spokesman declared.

But the detainee, who has been asymptomatic from the beginning, will remain in isolation at a quarantine facility prepared by the NBI.

“Siguro by around next week hopefully (Maybe next week he will leave isolation),” Lavin said.

The detainee has been placed under isolation since June after testing positive for the virus in both his first rapid antibody test and first PCR test.

He underwent another PCR test last weekend with a rapid antibody test conducted the week prior yielding a positive result.

Meanwhile, the NBI headquarters remains under indefinite partial lockdown and will only accept individuals who registered and paid online for clearances as well as those with subpoenas or appointments.

The NBI headquarters already conducted rapid antibody tests on 450 personnel and detainees last June 18 and 19.

They repeated the process on July 2 and 3 with the help of the Manila Health Bureau.

There are around 500 NBI personnel who are yet to undergo the tests.

Lavin said they are now mulling the possibility of conducting another round of tests.

“I will confer with the doctors again and feedback with the employees,” he stated.

The NBI has been on partial lockdown since June 18 after a detainee, who tested positive for COVID-19, was rushed to a hospital and died on June 16.
