PAO chief Acosta's nephew dies after Dengvaxia vaccination

A nephew of Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) Chief Persida Acosta has also passed away after having received shots of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia.

PAO Forensic Laboratory senior medical expert Dr. Alexis Sulit identified Acosta’s late nephew as Sam Gabriel Mendoza, 14.

“Died po Dec. 26,2020 at Maheseco Hospital, Bataan (He died last Dec. 26 at the Maheseco Hospital in Bataan province),” said Sulit.

The medical expert noted that Mendoza is the 161st Dengvaxia vaccinee who has been autopsied by the PAO forensic team.

At the request of the vaccinee’s family, Sulit said the PAO forensic team conducted an autopsy of Mendoza on Monday, Dec. 28.

The doctor said the results showed similar findings with the other dead Dengvaxia recipients the PAO forensic team autopsied..

“Immediate cause of death is cerebral hemorrhage and edema saka (as well as) pulmonary hemorrhage and edema,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sulit said the PAO chief has promised the family of her nephew that she will help them in bringing justice.

“Tutulungan po namin sa abot ng makakaya mabigyan ng katarungan ung pagkamatay (We will help the family as far as we could to help bring justice),” Sulit stated.

PAO has been following the 2017 order of then Justice Sec. Vitaliano Aguirre II to “extend free legal assistance in civil, criminal and administrative cases to all possible victims of Dengvaxia related injuries, illnesses and deaths.”

Last Nov. 25, the PAO filed, on behalf of the families of vaccinees, the 6^th batch of Dengvaxia complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The 6^th batch of Dengvaxia complaints concerns the deaths of 98 vaccinees, mostly children, and the suffering endured by a boy survivor.
