BuCor prepares officers vs attacks

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) held over the weekend a firearms proficiency training for its officers to help them deal with possible attacks.

“This is to hone the firearms handling skills of our custodial officers,” said the BuCor in a statement.

“Crucial gun retention techniques which are essential to survive potential attacks were given emphasis as well as marksmanship skills to neutralize the threat at the soonest possible time,” it added.

The BuCor said the event was held from Nov. 14 to 15 at the BuCor Firing Range at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

The event was facilitated by the Corrections Training School headed by Chief Supt. Robert Veneracion.

“Treat this event as a friendly competition and sportsmanship. Dahil ito ay importante sa ating trabaho. Wag kayo matakot sa sarili nyong baril. Ang baril mo ay dapat mas kilala mo pa sa kung sino man dahil yan ang partner mo saan ka man magpunta (This is important in our work. Don’t be afraid of your own guns. You should know your gun better because it goes with you wherever you go),” BuCor Dir. Gen. Gerald Bantag told the participants.

There have been over 10 BuCor officers and personnel who have been killed since the start of the administration of President Duterte.

The latest BuCor officer killed was Corrections Officer 1 Edmund Molina who was assigned at the Medium Security Compound of the NBP.

Molina was found dead on the night of July 15 inside the NBP with a gunshot wound on his head.
