PNRI irradiation services now fully automated to meet demands of businesses
The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) has upgraded its irradiation services into a fully automated commercial facility and can now sterilize more products and raw materials, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced.

“Ito ngayon ay fully automated na commercial facility (It is now a fully automated commercial facility),” said DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said during his weekly online briefing held Friday afternoon, Nov. 13.
He explained the PNRI’s multi-purpose irradiator has been upgraded to meet the demands of businesses.
“Alam naman natin na napakataas ng demand for irradiation ng mga tone-toneladang mga pagkain, mga spices at medical equipment at iba pang raw materials (We all know that there is a big demand for the irradiation of tons of food, spices, medical equipment, and other raw materials),” he pointed out.
“Malaki ang maitutulong ng automation kasi napapabilis ang proseso kaya isang malaking kontribusyon yan sa pagpapadami ng kliyente at pagbababilis ng serbisyo (Automation will be a big help because it will speed up processes and contribute in increasing its clients and speed up services),” Dela Peña added.
The PNRI’s irradiation facilities include the Cobalt-60 Multipurpose Irradiation Facility (MIF), the Gammacell-220 and the Electron Beam Irradiation Facility (EBIF).
PNRI extends the use of these facilities to various clients for food irradiation, medical products sterilization and for research purposes.
