Fetching goddaughters

“Okay if you think your stories are scary, you should listen to this!” my classmates from Laguna boasted.

“There was a woman who visited a friend whom she hadn’t seen for a long time. This woman was standing by the gate of the house of her friend, who was doing laundry that time, yelling to her: ‘Uy bisitahin mo naman ako sa bahay matagal na tayong hindi nakakapag-kwentuhan.’

“‘Ay oo nga busy lang kasi. Pero sige bibisitahin kita,’ the friend replied with a smile while she continued handwashing her white dress.

“‘Okay, asahan ko yan ha,’ the woman said as she walked away in haste.

“Then, all of a sudden, a heavy rain poured. The friend got dismayed, but she realized it was the start of the rainy season.

“That same day, the friend went to the woman’s house before dinner. But upon arriving at the house, she was shocked with what she saw. There was a wake. The thing was, she knew her friend was living alone.

“Upon entering the house, she couldn’t believe that it was her friend who was in the coffin. She looked at the date of her death, and she learned that her friend died three days ago due to cancer.

“But that’s not all, the woman was believed to have been recently seen by her young goddaughters, too.

“A few days after the funeral, something happened to one of the goddaughters. She and her friend were on their way to the river to take a bath when she remembered she left her personal body scrub in her house. So they went back for it.

“When they were about to cross the road, the goddaughter saw a woman dressed in white carrying white linens. As the linen floated, it formed waves that hypnotized her. She kept following it until she wasn’t aware, she was already in the middle of the road.

“Her friend tried to pull her back because there was a vehicle coming. But she managed to get pry herself loose from her friend’s grasp, and then she rushed to cross the street.

“As she ran toward the other side, the incoming car hit her hard, knocked her down, and bumped her head on the asphalt road. The vision of the woman faded before she fainted.

“The goddaughter was rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, she didn’t die, but she was in a coma for a month.

“Since she didn’t exactly see who the woman was, they suspected that it was her godmother because two more of the woman’s goddaughters had a near death experience like her. Unfortunately, one of the goddaughters died from pneumonia before the 40th day of the godmother.

“They said that child got her pneumonia from taking a long shower in the rain. Before she died, she was asked, Bakit ka ba kasi naligo ng matagal sa ulan?’

“And her reply was, ‘Sabi kasi ni ninang eh.’” he ended.

“Cheers!” I proposed a toast to break the ice.

“Okay my turn! Hold onto your seats guys!” I said with excitement.
