BTS bags 4 awards, BLACKPINK wins first trophy at 2020 MTV Video Music Awards


K-pop superstars BTS won four awards and iconic girl group BLACKPINK received their first ever trophy at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) held Aug. 30 (Aug. 31 in the Philippines).

BTS swept all the categories that they were nominated in and won four awards: Best Group, Best K-pop, Best Pop and Best Choreography. This is the second straight year that BTS won Best Group and Best K-pop, two categories that were added to the VMAs in 2019. 

Other nominees for the Best Group award were Monsta X, BLACKPINK, 5 Seconds of Summer, Chloe x Halle, CNCO, Little Mix, Now United, The 1975 and Twenty One Pilots.

BTS also won Best K-pop for their song “On.” Other nominees were EXO, “Obsession”; (G)I-DLE, "Oh My God"; Monsta X, "Someone's Someone"; Red Velvet, "Psycho"; and TXT, "9 and Three Quarters (Run Away)." 

In the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, BTS won Best K-pop for “Boy With Luv,” a song which featured singer Halsey. 

BTS also grabbed the Best Pop award for “On,” winning it over Halsey’s "You should be sad,"  Jonas Brothers’ "What a Man Gotta Do," Justin Bieber ft. Quavo’s "Intentions," Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande’s "Rain On Me" and Taylor Swift’s "Lover."

The idol group also won Best Choreography courtesy of Son Sung Deuk and The Lab. Other nominees were CNCO & Natti Natasha’s "Honey Boo," DaBaby’s "BOP," Dua Lipa’s "Physical," Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande’s "Rain On Me"  and Normani’s "Motivation."

In addition, BTS performed their latest hit song “Dynamite,” the No. 1 most viewed music video in the first 24 hours of release, for the first time at this year’s MTV VMAs. 

On the other hand, girl group BLACKPINK grabbed the Song of Summer award for their hit song “How You Like That,” their first win at the MTV VMAs. After it was announced that BLACKPINK won, the hashtag #BLACKPINK1stVMA trended on Twitter. 

Other nominees in the category were Cardi B’s "WAP"; Miley Cyrus’ "Midnight Sky"; DaBaby’s"Rockstar"; DJ Khaled’s "Popstar"; Doja Cat’s "Say So"; Jack Harlow’s "Whats Poppin"; Lil Baby’s "We Paid"; Dua Lipa’s "Break My Heart"; Megan Thee Stallion’s "Savage (Remix)"; Pop Smoke’s "The Woo"; Saint Jhn’s "Roses"; Saweetie’s "Tap In"; Harry Styles’ "Watermelon Sugar"; Taylor Swift’s "Cardigan"; and The Weeknd’s "Blinding Lights."

At last year’s MTV VMAs, BLACKPINK got nominated for Best Group and Best K-pop for “Kill This Love.”
