They look ravishingly delicious!
“Don’t play with your food.” That’s what our moms used to tell us when we were younger. Kids’ imaginations go into many places and, at times, manifest way beyond the play area. The thought of messing up our food isn’t quite as thrilling for our beloved guardians. Good thing is that when we’re older, that same problem no longer applies.
That’s how it was for Ruby Perman. Instead of just making art, she created edible fashion forward looks for some of the world’s biggest stars on her plate.
“I’ve always loved fashion and seeing what celebrities wear on the red carpet," she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “When I entertain guests in my home, I’m all about the presentation and the preparation of food.”
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Ruby’s family moved to the US when she was seven years old. Now, she lives in Dana Point, California along with her husband and two kids. Her love for food styling is fairly new, only having discovered her passion for it just a year ago.
“It all started when I was trying to create a new artistic profile photo on Instagram. My idea was to cut out a photo of myself and I found a mango so I proceeded to style myself in a mango dress,” she says. “I had so much fun making it, and now I take requests from my followers as well as brand collaborations and custom art.”
Her latest “styling gigs” include dressing Kpop girl group Blackpink with ramen noodles and nori, American rapper Cardi B with cherries, “Watermelon Sugar” singer Harry Styles with, of course, watermelon, and pop icon Beyoncé with pancake cereal.
“I create edible art so the hardest part of being a food stylist is eating the creation after I style the plate,” Ruby says. “I styled Ariana Grande in an avocado gown, and after I took photos I mashed it up and made guacamole!”
Apart from producing red carpet ready plates, Ruby also makes accessories, decors, and other merchandise inspired by the food masterpieces, which help provide education to factory workers across the globe.
