Manila Auxilliary Bishop Broderick Pabillio reminded the faithful that the All Saints’ and All Souls’ holidays are occasions to celebrate the lives of departed loved ones and so focusing on Halloween trick-or-treats is quite un-Christian.

Bulaklak is a sign of life, nagdadala rin tayo ng kandila, yan din ay sign of life, may liwanag. Tapos nagdadala rin tayo ng pagkain, again sign of life. It is really a celebration of life (What do we bring? Flowers. Flowers are signs of life. We also bring candles, another sign of life because it brings light. Then, we also bring food, again, a sign of life. It is really a celebration of life),” he said over Church-run Radyo Veritas. “Life na gusto natin na ang mga yumao natin ay pumunta na sa langit kaya ipinagdarasal natin sila (We are offering prayers for our deceased loved ones for them to enter heaven),” added Pabillo. Pabillio asked the faithful to avoid wearing Halloween costumes. “Kaya ang Halloween ay hindi iyan Christian celebration, which is a celebration of death. Yung mga nakakatakot na mukha, mga demonyo hindi yan maka-Kristiyanong celebration at ‘yan yung ginagamit ng secularism (Halloween is not a Christian celebration. It is a celebration of death. Those creepy faces, demons are not part of Christian celebrations),” said Pabillio.
