Acosta warns prosecution await those creating fake social media accounts of real persons

Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) Chief Persida Acosta on Thursday (Dec. 17) warned criminal prosecution awaits those creating fake social media accounts of real persons.

Acosta made the warning after discovering this week two fake accounts made under her name in the social media application Facebook.

The PAO chief pointed out that creating bogus accounts of real persons is “an offense under Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175).”

Acosta said the two fake Facebook accounts she discovered using her name and photos are https://www.facebook.com/persida.acosta.1 and https://www.facebook.com/attypersida.ruedaacosta.

Aside from the two, Acosta said she already found numerous fake accounts using her name and photos.

“Marami na removed na ng FB (Many have been removed by Facebook),” Acosta said.

With this, the PAO chief called on the public to report fake social media accounts to get these taken out.

“The people should help one another in reporting fake accounts so that the FB management could act immediately in shutting down and removing said libelous, fake, and malicious accounts which are tantamount to violation of human rights of every person to his own identity and, an offense under Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175),” Acosta said.
