City official asks telecom firms to give weather bulletin to subscribers

By Zaldy Comanda BAGUIO CITY— The City Council told the telephone companies operating in the city and other parts of the Cordillera to send advisories to their subscribers as a public service prior to and during a calamity. Councilor Edgar Avila (photo from City Government of Baguio) Councilor Edgar Avila (photo from City Government of Baguio) A resolution was filed on Thursday by Councilor Edgar Avila requesting Globe, Smart, PLDT, Sun Cellular and other telecommunication firms to send weather bulletin and other advisories through Short Message Systems (SMS) to give subscribers an updated information. Avila said, this measure will allow the subscribers to be informed of the situation, allow them to do preventive measure, prepare, respond, and recover from any types of disasters and emergencies. Under Republic Act 10639 or the The Free Mobile Disaster Alerts Act, which was passed into law on June 20, 2014 where information from Government agencies like the local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils (DRRMC), PAGASA, Armed Forces of the Philippines(AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Public Works and Highways where advisories emanate from. “This is their mandate to provide information education drive to the public through cellphone broadcast. Text messaging can be useful for communicating information to the public in improving work force situation awareness during emergencies,” Avila said.
