Children dressed as angels, saints to show true meaning of All Saints, Souls Day

By Alex San Juan Unlike the usual scary costumes during Halloween, children in Quezon City paraded as little saints and angels in time with the observance of the All Saints' Day. A total of 54 children, aged one to 12, dressed as their favorite saints and marched on the streets of Barangay Sikatuna Village during the annual Parade of Saints of the Parish of the Lord of Divine Mercy (PLDM). The residents gave them treats such as chocolates and candies. Other children also dressed up as little Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, Saint Pedro Calungsod, Saint Paul the Apostle, Saint Mary of Bethany, Saint Monica, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Catherine of Siena, among others. According to Bro. Bong Rillo, head of the Worship Ministry of PLDM, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day should be remembered as holy days and not a time for scary Halloween parties. Rillo explained that nowadays, the concept of Halloween is misinterpreted by the people. It is actually a Catholic tradition meaning "eve to All Saints' Day." "To be Catholic is to be true. That's the point of our faith. I think it's better for the people to know about saints. Kasi ngayon puro superheroes, eh hindi naman tao yung mga yun. Itong mga saints tao talaga na dineclare ng isang simbahan na maging saint," Rillo explained. He added that the Parade of Saints is a way to honor the saints who lived defending the Catholic faith. Prior to the parade, catechism classes were held for the children to know more about Christian doctrines and teachings, including the life of the saints. While horror connotations have been linked during November 1st and 2nd, Rillo said that All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day is a "call to holiness." "It's a call to holiness. We should know that we are all called to holiness. By nature good naman ang tao kaya lang we have to strive harder to be perfect like the Father, we have to be like the Son," he said. "Yun ang pinaka-essence talaga ng All Saints' Day. We are all called to holiness and we have to strive to do that despite what the world thinks." The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) recently encouraged parents to dress their children "like saints and not like characters from the underworld" to create a deeper awareness on the lives of holy men and women.
