DOJ offers P2-M reward for Bantag's arrest

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday, June 19, offered a P2-million reward for any information that would lead to the arrest of former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) director general Gerald Q. Bantag. Bantag has been charged in court with two counts of murder for the deaths of radio broadcaster Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa and alleged middleman Cristito Villamor Palana, a person deprived of liberty (PDL) at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City. The Las Pinas City regional trial court (RTC) has issued an arrest order against Bantag for the killing of Percy Lapid, while a similar arrest order has been issued by the Muntinlupa City RTC for the death of Palana. Bantag has neither been arrested nor surrendered.  He has been declared a fugitive from justice. For his co-accused, former BuCor security officer Ricardo S. Zulueta, the DOJ offered a P1-million reward for his arrest.  Despite the arrest order also issued against Zulueta by the two RTC branches, he remained at large. In its announcement, the DOJ informed the public that any information on the whereabouts of the two accused may be reported to 0945831058 and 09284169585. “Magbibigay na tayo ng reward para mapabilis at matuloy na ang paglilitis kasi hindi matutuloy ang paglilitis kung wala ‘yung akusado (We will offer the reward so that the trial will proceed because it couldn’t push through without the accused),” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said during a press briefing. Remulla then urged Bantag and Zulueta to surrender. “Wala gustong maging wanted sa batas (Nobody wants to be wanted by the law),” he said. “Kaya kung pwede sumuko na lang (So, if possible, just surrender),” he added.
