PBA: Tenorio adds new milestone to basketball resume

LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra (PBA Images) With 12 PBA seasons tucked under his belt, LA Tenorio added another milestone after joining the Top 15 all-time assists leaders of the league. The Barangay Ginebra playmaker achieved the feat in their 104-97 victory over GlobalPort Batang Pier on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018.
Tenorio joined an elite list that includes the legendary Sonny Jaworski. The "Living Legend" leads the list together with Ramon Fernandez, Dindo Pumaren, Johnny Abarrientos and Jimmy Alapag – all comprising the top 5.
Other notable names of the all-time assist leaders include Willie Generalao, Ronnie Magsanoc, Philip Cezar, Olsen Racela, Francis Arnaiz, Bernie Fabiosa, Alex Cabagnot, Atoy Co and Ricardo Brown.
"15th, ibig sabihin tumatanda na ako. 'Yun ang ibig sabihin nun," Tenorio said in jest.
"To be honest, hindi ko rin alam at hindi ko rin ine-expect na makukuha yung milestone na ganoon," he said. "Hindi ko rin siya trina-track down."
Regardless, Tenorio is humbled in attaining the record, giving him more determination to come to work every day.
"I'm very honored. For, it's a blessing. It is an achievement parang the more gusto mo pang increase o pakita ang kaya mong gawin."
As the Gin Kings point guard, he feels that the assist statistic is a good gauge that you are doing your job for the team.
"Especially as a point guard, siyempre tinitignan yang assists, kung paano mag-deliver, kung paano to make your teammates look good every game," said Tenyente.
"The more pagbubutihan ko especially for the team. I’m a point guard na hindi naman talaga really looking to score. I'm a point guard really looking to set up," he added.
At 33, Tenorio hopes that this record is not the last before he calls it quits.
"Magandang achievement para sa akin ito but again, sana hindi mag-stop dito. I will continue to be more aggressive in the game."
With his name placed alongside players he looks up to, Tenorio feels grateful to be there and at the same time still rise on the list. Only he and Alex Cabagnot of the San Miguel Beermen are active players in the PBA all-time assists list.
"I'm very thankful and honored to be part of the top 15. Sino-sino ba nasa top 15? Malamang nandyan si Johnny, si Olsen – maging member of that group and still playing diba?" he said.
Looking forward, Tenorio still hopes to make the Top 10 list.
"Top 10? Maybe. We will see. Ma-aabot ko naman iyan siguro. Basta every game continue lang ako maglalaro. Dasal lang tayo na walang injury," Tenorio ended.
