Cebu Normal University agrees to educate PDLs at Leyte Regional Prison
Faculty members of the Cebu Normal University (CNU) have agreed to educate persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
In a statement, the BuCor said the LRP officials signed last August 6 a memorandum of agreement (MOA) that would allow the university to give “educational opportunities, livelihood skills development, and personal growth for the PDLs under the custody of LRP.
“This collaborative initiative is aimed at establishing an academic and skills development partnership that would directly benefit PDLs within the LRP, aligning with the institution’s reformation and reintegration programs,” it said.
The signing of the MOU was held at the LRP in Abuyog, Leyte. It was attended by CNU officials led by President Dr. Daniel A. Ariaso Sr.; Dr. Joseph Elvir Tubilan, vice president for Research, Publications, Innovation, Commercialization, and Extension; Dr. Meshel Balijon, vice president for Academic Affairs; Dr. Laarne Pontillas, director for Extension Services; Dr. Janrey Colmo, assistant quality assurance coordinator of College of Public Governance, Safety, and Sustainability (CPGSS); and Jaira Marie Soliva, executive assistant to the university president.
The LRP was led by C/SInsp. Nancy P. Pun-ad who represented Acting Superintendent C/Supt. Ricardo R. Sespene Jr.
Ariaso said the MOA specifically addresses the academic and training needs of PDLs, and intends to prepare them for successful reintegration into society.
