The heat is on

Summer is surely here and temperatures are rising. The heat index in certain areas is keeping well above 40 degrees celsius and advisories regarding dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat strokes are prevalent. El Niño is definitely not helping, adding maybe 2-3 degrees to the already high readings.

Public and private sector collaboration

The budget deficit of the Philippines has been decried by some sectors as growing out of proportion. The most recent reports place our total outstanding national debt at P14.62 trillion as of the end of 2023 or 60.2% of GDP. However, Secretary of Finance Raphael Recto believes that this level of debt is not alarming. He is convinced that the continued growth of the economy can fund much needed state revenues.

If you look-up “Silicon Valley Philippines” on Google, the top hits will direct you to an IT reseller on the Shopee online shopping platform or to a facebook account also of another IT reseller. That’s not exactly what I was hoping to find.

Education is life

The 2024 national budget was approved by Congress and signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. (PBBM, as he is popularly referred to) last December 20, 2023.  Outside of protracted deliberations on the allocation of so-called “confidential funds” to various agencies of government, there did not seem to be any significant hitches. The hearings at both upper and lower houses of Congress were smooth, as were the bicameral discussions to reconcile their respective versions. Our legislative budget process is far from perfect, but it gets done.
