Christmas at the frontlines: Honoring the sacrifices of Filipino soldiers

As the world prepares for the festive season, celebrating with family and loved ones, Filipino soldiers stationed in far-flung areas quietly stand sentinel, ensuring our safety and security. While most of us revel in the joy of Christmas traditions, these guardians of peace endure a different reality—one marked by selflessness, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the nation. This Christmas, it is crucial that we not only appreciate their efforts but also extend understanding and gratitude for their tireless service.

Honoring valor: The US congressional gold medal

On Sept. 3, 2024, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong hosted the awarding ceremony of the US congressional gold medal, honoring the bravery and sacrifices of Filipino World War II veterans. The event was attended by US Representative Assistant Director Kevin J. McAllister, US Department of Veterans Affairs Representative, and Philippine Veterans Affairs Office Administrator Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu. Forty-three veterans were awarded, including two living recipients and six women who served gallantly during the war, particularly in the battles of Bataan. My late father was a recipient of the USC gold medal, which I received on his behalf. He was a USAFFE veteran and survivor of the death march. The ceremony, held annually, celebrates major historical wartime events and honors the contributions of Filipino veterans, especially those who fought in Central and Northern Luzon, as well as during significant moments like the Leyte and Lingayen landings.

Bridging excellence: UP alumni uniting vision and legacy

On Aug. 17, 2024, the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) celebrated its annual general alumni–faculty homecoming. This event offers an opportunity to renew friendships, network, and reminisce about some of the best years spent on campus. This year's homecoming was a resounding success, centered around the theme, “One UP, from Vision to Reality.” The UPAA board, led by its President Robert Lester Aranton, a PEZA board member and an accomplished businessman and industrialist with interests in real estate development and logistics, deserves the highest accolades. Congratulations are also due to UP President Angelo A. Jimenez for the overall success of the affair.
