As the nation observed the solemnity of Holy Week, a profound period of reflection and renewal for many Filipinos, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reaffirmed its commitment not only to defend the nation’s sovereignty, but also to uphold the values that make its service noble and humane. For the Filipino soldier, Holy Week is more than just a religious observance—it is a reminder of the spiritual and moral compass that must guide every action, every mission, and every decision in and out of uniform.

The AFP, through its Chaplain Service and Values Formation Program, continued to strengthen its efforts to build a military that is makatao, makadiyos, and makabayan—humane, God-fearing, and patriotic. These values are at the heart of the soldier’s duty, and Holy Week provided a sacred space for rekindling this spiritual foundation.

The spiritual core of the Filipino soldier

The integration of spiritual development into military life is a cornerstone of AFP's internal transformation. Holy Week services, reflections, and activities held across military camps were not mere traditions—they are an embodiment of a soldier’s personal and collective journey toward inner peace, integrity, and purpose.

Through Holy Masses, Stations of the Cross, confessions, and ecumenical gatherings, soldiers were reminded that their strength is not only drawn from discipline and training, but also from faith. It is this faith that molds them into warriors of peace—ready to protect human dignity, uphold justice, and reject violence and oppression.

Respect for human rights rooted in spirituality

The AFP’s adherence to human rights is deeply tied to its spiritual teachings. A soldier grounded in Christian values—love for neighbor, compassion for the oppressed, and respect for life—becomes a protector, not an oppressor. During Holy Week, the story of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice is a powerful symbol of nonviolence and service for the good of others. This narrative resonates with soldiers who are often deployed in conflict areas, encouraging them to serve with empathy and a clear moral compass.

Through continued human rights seminars, the AFP emphasizes that defending the Constitution and protecting civilians are not merely legal obligations—they are spiritual duties that reflect the love of God in action.

Fortifying the family

Strong family ties are vital to a soldier’s well-being and ethical grounding. In military culture, the family is considered the first school of values, where lessons of sacrifice, responsibility, and love for country are first learned. Holy Week, often spent in reunion or prayer with loved ones, becomes a timely reminder that a strong family support system leads to more resilient and morally upright service members.

The AFP recognizes this by promoting family-centered activities such as couples’ retreats, parenting seminars, and faith-based counseling sessions. These initiatives help ensure that soldiers are not only warriors in the field, but also faithful spouses, devoted parents, and responsible citizens at home.

Advocating against corruption through faith

Corruption has no place in a military institution founded on honor and spiritual conviction. Holy Week, with its themes of repentance and moral accountability, becomes an avenue for soldiers and officers alike to reflect on the importance of integrity in public service.

AFP’s anti-corruption programs are complemented by its Values Formation modules, where the teachings of honesty, servant leadership, and stewardship are emphasized. By rooting these principles in faith, the AFP seeks to inspire a new generation of soldiers who reject greed, power abuse, and deceit.

Soldiers are taught that true greatness lies in humility and service—not in rank or privilege. This message is especially powerful during Holy Week, as they are reminded of Christ washing the feet of His disciples—a profound image of leadership through service.

A vision of a God-centered armed forces

As the AFP continues to fulfill its mandate amid complex security challenges, it does so with a renewed commitment to spiritual growth. The long-term vision is clear: to cultivate a military force that is not only capable and courageous, but also compassionate and morally grounded.

Programs like the AFP’s Moral and Spiritual Enhancement Program, Chaplain-led counseling, and interfaith dialogues are all part of a larger mission to build character, promote peace, and foster a culture of ethical service.

In times of peace and in times of war, the Filipino soldier must remain anchored in values that transcend the battlefield. Holy Week, with its message of hope, redemption, and selfless love, reinforces this sacred duty.

In the end, a truly strong Armed Forces is one where every soldier is not just a defender of the land—but also a steward of life, a bearer of peace, and a warrior guided by the light of faith.
