Ji Changwook is undoubtedly one of South Korea’s most popular actors.

Having played the lead in some of the most memorable K-dramas of all time, his boyish appeal has catapulted the 37-year-old to become a top favorite among passionate Filipino fans.

No matter which search engine you use, Ji Changwook seems synonymous with one word: transformation.

The actor is known for his unique ability to shift seamlessly between characters, his magnetic presence both on and off screen, and his exceptional acting techniques.

A storied career

Ji studied performing arts at Dankook University, and shortly after graduating, began his career on the musical stage.

After appearing in numerous supporting and early lead roles, including the daily drama “Smile Again” (2010) and “Warrior Baek Dong-soo” (2011), his breakthrough performance came in the period drama “Empress Ki” (2013), where he convinced audiences with his portrayal of Toghon Temür, the 16th Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty.

This was followed by the action thrillers “Healer” (2014) and “The K2” (2016).

After his discharge from the military in 2019, he appeared in romcoms such as “Backstreet Rookie” and “Lovestruck in the City,” both of which aired in 2020 during the pandemic.

However, it was his role in “The Sound of Magic” (2022) that showcased his versatility in singing, dancing, and his acting range. In it, he plays Ri Eul, a mysterious magician who wants to remain child-like forever.

More than just a calculated career move, the script resonated with him as the story brought him back to the early struggles of his youth. The drama centers around a financially challenged student who stopped believing in magic.

That same year, Ji appeared in the series “If You Wish Upon Me,” a healing drama combined with romance. In the show, he plays Yoon Gyeo-rye, an ex-convict who rediscovers life after volunteering at a hospice center.

His return to action thrillers happened in 2023 with “The Worst of Evil,” where he demonstrated his evolution as a mature actor. Playing Park Jun-mo, he gave audiences another memorable performance, shining in a story filled with darkness and violence.

Ji is slated to appear next in the highly anticipated series “Gangnam B-side” (2024), where he plays an outlaw named Yoon Gil-ho. While the role seems in stark contrast to the characters he has played over the years, this new drama is expected to showcase the charismatic actor’s range in what has been a storied 16-year acting career.

Their "spirited" conversation brought out the actress' fun nature, while the show revealed Ji’s comedic side. The two actors bantered like siblings, pretending to argue and bicker.

His media appearances, along with first-hand accounts from Filipino journalists praising his warmth and depth during press events, solidify his positive image in the Filipino psyche.
