'I'm lucky to have her' – Jeremy Miado attributes MMA success to wife, Chelsa

Jeremy “The Jaguar” Miado has a chance to further his case for a ONE World Title shot when he takes on dangerous newcomer Mansur Malachiev at ONE Fight Night 11: Eersel vs. Menshikov on Saturday,  June 10, inside Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
And as he enters contendership territory, he can only look back and appreciate how he got to this point.
Miado knows that a win over Malachiev will push him even closer to ONE Strawweight World Champion Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks – a far cry from his position from a few years back when he lost four of his first six bouts in ONE Championship.
Now riding a four-fight winning streak, Miado believes moving away from the Philippines to train in Thailand was the only option.
“We had to leave our 1-year-old son. It wasn’t easy, but we had to take the risk,” Miado said.
“Back when I was in the Philippines, I was inconsistent in ONE. I would win a fight and then lose the other. I didn’t have a lot of training partners in the Philippines. I was only working with my wife and my brother, and I was also their coach.
“It was hard. I had to make that sacrifice for me to reach my goals and win a championship.”
None of this would’ve been possible without the help of his wife Chesla, who has been the guiding wind behind Miado’s wings in his ascent up the strawweight division.
It was Chesla’s friend – #3-ranked atomweight Denice Zamboanga – who brought them to Marrok Force during the pandemic, a time when Miado also started his winning run.
“The Jaguar” couldn’t be any more grateful to have a life partner like Chesla, who’s been holding the household together while Miado focuses on his camp.
“Last year my wife went home because my son tested positive for COVID. She went home, left her camp, and focused on taking care of our son. Then she returned with our son after four months,” he said.
“I’m lucky to have a wife like her. She knows that being a fighter isn’t easy. Whatever the situation, she understands it. Like in this case, I left them in Bangkok to train here in Phuket, but she understands.
“She knows that we have a purpose here. She knows that sacrifices have to be made. I’m lucky to have her. She gives way so I can focus on my ONE career.”
