SEAG 'mishaps' could have been prevented if funds used properly - Duterte

The mishaps in the country's hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games could have been prevented if the funds have been used properly, President Duterte said Monday.

The President observed that there was "negligence" in organizing the regional sports meet, citing the failure to prepare for some "unforeseen events" despite the allocation of funds.
"I am not attributing it to anybody but you know it’s a huge fund and there ought not to have problems like even logistics and things. Because you can do it, not really with precision, but had you made most of the money then you could have avoided the critical situations, the mishaps," he said in an interview over GMA's morning program "Unang Hirit" aired Monday.
"If you would ponder on it, it’s actually negligence or unforeseen events that you failed to prepare for," he added.
The President earlier ordered an investigation into the alleged irregularities in the country's hosting of the SEA Games, particularly how the public funds were spent. He has apologized to the athletes for the troubles that hounded the tournament and assured that no one will be spared in the investigation.
The biennial sports tournament has recently been marred by logical lapses that inconvenienced the athletes such as transport and hotel delays. The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) led by House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has been under fire for allegedly mishandling the logistics of the P6-billion event.
The President, dismayed by the glitches in the games, maintained that the transport and hotel delays could have been avoided if there was adequate planning.
"It was a huge sum. You do not wait for the bus companies to send their buses to help you out. You had so many years to prepare for it. So how come na ganyan ang nangyari?" he said.
"And even in the food, and in the billeting of the hotel na hindi nila alam kung saang hotel. These things could have been avoided if you used the money correctly," he added.
Malacańang earlier asked the organizers to rectify the errors in the country's hosting of the SEA Games and offer "better services." It agreed with the critics that there was indeed something wrong with the preparations.
