Mayor Carmelita “Menchie” Abalos announced on Sunday the postponement of the 75th Liberation Day Commemorative Program, the Military and Civic Parade, and the Liberation Day Concert that were scheduled next Sunday.
“With the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of Novel Coronavirus outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, Mayor Menchie Abalos has announced the postponement of the Commemorative Program, Liberation Parade and Liberation Concert scheduled on February 9, 2020,” Mandaluyong Public Information Office said in an advisory.
Jimmy Isidro, chief of staff of Abalos, told the Manila Bulletin in a phone interview that the activities were cancelled to avoid the possible spread of the disease due to the volume of people expected to attend the said events.
He also advised Mandaleños to wait for further announcement from the city government for the schedule of other activities of the annual celebration.
Meanwhile, Isidro shared that at least 20,000 pieces of cloth face masks will be distributed soon to city government employees.
“Mandaluyong City will distribute 20,000 face masks made of sewn cloth to front liners in the city. These include city government employees such as traffic enforcers, cashiers, among others,” he said.
On February 9, Mandaluyong City will mark the 75th year of its liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II.
Coinciding with the celebration would be the 26th year since former President Fidel Ramos officially converted Mandaluyong to a city through Republic Act No. 7675 in 1994.
On Sunday, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the first fatality of the 2019 nCoV ARD in the country, involving a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan, China.
The patient, who died on Saturday for severe pneumonia, was the first confirmed fatality of the virus outside China, according to the WHO.
It is also the second confirmed case of the deadly virus in the country, after the DOH confirmed the first case last week, involving a 38-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan, China.
