VAW cases down by 21% in Eastern Visayas

By Marie Tonette-Marticio PALO, Leyte – The number of cases of violence against women (VAW) dropped by 21 percent in 2018, according to the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) of Police Regional Office 8. WCPD Chief PSI Analiza Armeza said a total of 997 VAW incidents were recorded for the year 2018, compared to 2017 which had 1,267 cases. "This notable decrease of incidents is the product of the combined efforts of the PNP and our counterparts in the fight against gender-based violence through our intensified information campaign in schools and barangays," she said. Armeza also said the police and its partners in the fight against VAW will initiate inter-agency fora to ensure the public's awareness of their rights, and inform them on what to do and where to go whenever abuses happen. The WCPD chief disclosed that their most commonly recorded case of VAW was physical abuse committed by the victims’ partners (705 incidents), followed by rape (94). "Based on our records, women who are financially dependent on their partners are common victims of abuses as compared to those who are working or professionals," she added. WCPD8 takes the lead role in conducting investigation and filing of cases involving abuse and violence particularly against women and children. VAW cases are filed with the Family Courts or Regional Trial Court (RTC) with judicial jurisdiction on the crime committed.
