While many people think being 2017 Binibining Pilipinas International is enough to spell success for Mariel de Leon's entry into show business, she actually sees it from a different point of view.

"Parang kasi some people always underestimate beauty queens na parang 'Ay wala siyang alam,'" she told Bulletin Entertainment.
Thankfully, that breed is dying and the world is changing to give a better perception of women.
"We are more outspoken now, we want equality in all type of workplaces, not just in pageantry," she said.
During her reign, Mariel was known to speak up and make her stand known on certain topics. But more mature now, she said she'll be more careful in delivering her message as advised by her parents, Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, both actors.
"I'm still very expressive it's just that I will always think about it more and I'll choose my words more carefully," she said. "Pero if I really believe in something, and if something is wrong, then I will speak up about it."
She added: "Kasi the sad thing is most people think that if you have a different opinion from popular opinion, you're a bad person na agad. That shouldn't be the case as everyone has their own opinion and they shouldn't be judged."
New path
Now that she's entering showbiz, Mariel believes being true to herself is her biggest asset.
She wants to do crying scenes and even slap scenes. Hosing stints? Bring it on.
"If they give me small roles for now ay okay lang sa akin. I would never expect kasi I'm still baby pa sa showbiz," she said.
Mariel has undergone different workshops with Direk Ryan Carlos and Direk Jonathon S. Oraño, respectively.
But for her, the most challenging part of being an actor is that she comes from a celebrity family.
"Kasi people will always expect a certain standard from me which is hard because I know I'll never reach that standard," she admitted.
And although her clan's success in the industry is tough act to follow, she promises to always give her best in everything she does.
Mariel recently signed a management contract with LVD Management and Consultancy Services under Leo Dominguez.
And just a few months after her debut film as leading lady of Coco Martin in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry "Ang Panday," Mariel will be seen in the upcoming independent film "Latay."
The 24-year-old beauty queen-turned-actress plays the ex-girlfriend of the lead actor Allen Dizon. The film stars Lovi Poe as Allen's wife.
