La Union guv withdraws reelection bid

Incumbent La Union Gov. Francisco Ortega III filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for mayor of San Fernando City on Saturday, Nov. 13, following his withdrawal of reelection bid as the province’s top official.

Ortega personally appeared before the City Commission on Elections (Comelec) office at around 3 p.m to formalize his mayoralty race.

It can be recalled that on Tuesday, Nov. 9, the provincial chief executive withdrew his COC for governor.

Ortega’s daughter Raphaela Veronica Ortega-David will replace her father’s gubernatorial bid instead.

David first filed her COC for Board Member in the first district. The father and daughter both filed their COC on Oct. 1.

Ortega will run under the banner of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).

In 2016, Ortega was elected as governor, succeeding his father three-term governor Manuel Ortega.

He was again reelected in the 2019 elections.

Meantime, the Provincial Comelec Office said only two candidates have pulled out their candidacy in the province so far.

The poll body has set the deadline for substitution until Nov. 15.
