DepEd asks school officials, teachers, students to attend Rizal Day events

By Merlina Hernando-Malipot The Department of Education (DepEd) enjoined the regional and division school officials, teachers, and students to participate in the different programs, events, and commemorative activities related to the 122nd anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal. Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in DepEd Memorandum No. 96 series of 2018, directed regional directors, schools division superintendents, regional and division special events coordinators, public and private elementary and school heads to take part in this year’s celebration of Rizal Month. This is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 126 series of 2001 of “Declaring the Month of December of Every Year as Rizal Month.” Education Secretary Leonor Briones (PCOO / MANILA BULLETIN) Education Secretary Leonor Briones (PCOO / MANILA BULLETIN) DepEd, as a member of the National Steering Committee, will join the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and other government agencies, local government units (LGUs), and private sector in conducting activities related to the event – particularly in the conduct of the simultaneous Rizal Day flag-raising and wreath-laying rites on December 30, 2018, the celebration of the 2018 “Rizal Day.” Briones noted that this year’s celebration aims to “give the youth a chance to fully recognize the value of historical events, especially the martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, which shaped the nation and constituted the soul of the people, giving meaning to their collective life and aspirations.” She said the 2018 celebration aims to “inspire the Filipino people to keep the lofty ideals and teaching of the national hero to stay alive in their hearts and minds” and to “know the significance of Rizal’s life and the lessons on nationalism, civic consciousness, and the importance of education for Filipino youth of today.” Briones also emphasized that this year’s celebration aims to “utilize artistic and cultural activity to promote and educate the learners on the essence of Filipino literacy classics in their lives.” To make the commemoration “more meaningful,” Briones also encouraged all public and private schools to carry out activities integrate in related subject areas such as Sibika at Kultura; Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika (HEKASI), Araling Panlipunan, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH), Filipino and English – among others “during classroom discussions to make this commemoration more meaningful.”
