Ormoc City – Mayor Richard Gomez recently officiated a mass civil wedding here for 139 couples at the Superdome.
Mayor Gomez told the Manila Bulletin that it was a happy occasion for the couples from Ormoc’s 110 barangays who got married free of charge.
“All the brides came in wedding gowns, with nice bouquets made of recycled plastic, even headdresses. The grooms, on the other hand, were either dressed in white barong or long sleeves,” Gomez said.
The couples, clustered into 6 groups, had Vice Mayor Leo Carmelo Locsin Jr. and the city councilors as their principal sponsors, Gomez said.
Gomez added that his office made sure that the couples’ wedding day was made memorable.
Each couple received a gift pack from him and Rep. Lucy Torres - Gomez containing two hams and queso de bola, rice, canned goods, a cake and a bottle of wine each.
While it was not the first mass wedding in this city, Delia Corbo of the City Social Welfare and Development Office described it as the best decorated mass wedding, with decorations courtesy of the City Mayor’s Office.
Corbo said that the mass wedding was part of Women’s Month celebration, aimed at empowering women by having their unions recognized by the state for the sake of their children.
