It’s here, the humongous “Big Bad Wolf Book Sale” at the World Trade Center this Feb. 16 to 25 at the World Trade Center! At our Bulong Pulungan forum at the Sofitel Hotel, we were happy to hear about this giant book sale at close to 70 percent less than in regular book stores or online sales. And listen, the book sale is not charging any admission fees in its 10-day run, 24 hours daily. So you can go in and out any time of the day or night! Gawad Kalinga, a social project, founded  (by Tony Manaloto) and managed by Filipinos to uplift lives in depressed communities by proving livelihood opportunities and housing projects together with Book Xcess, a Malaysia Book Shop run by founder Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng decided to partner together in the country. This resulted in bringing the Big Bad Wolf book fair here, a “first” after its success in Indonesia and Malaysia. The Fair provides world class, brand new, but very affordable books to the reading public. The range of the available books in the fair is mind-boggling, so happy browsing! “But even more importantly, we want to make these books available to the hands of non-readers, most of whom are in underserved communities,” stressed Lito Nadal, MVM director and Big Bad Wolf Philippines head. Nadal is excited and so is Miguel Mercado, Big Bad Wolf marketing head who talked about the two-month long preparations and the excitement the fair has been generating. ABS-CBN is sponsoring the BBW fair, and Mercado has made his presentations to communities and schools, so expect a huge, huge crow daily in World Trade Center. Shoppers are surely to come back as the floor will be full of tables with books according to their genre. Best of all, credit cards will be accepted! Bring a small rolling luggage to carry your purchases, Mercado advised the excited Bulong members. Even the staff and waiters of the hotel had fun browsing thru the books Mercado brought along. The head waiter saw the book he gave his girl friend for her birthday as she pined for it. To his dismay he checked the price and found it was tagged less than half what he paid for it. Yes, that is what awaits all book lovers at the Big Bad Wolf Fair. Books, books, books at low, low prices! The executive director of Gawad Kalinga said that a portion of the proceeds of the sale of the books will be used to support GK’s efforts to support the displaced families in Marawi, around Mt. Mayon and the many poor communities that the multi-awarded NGO are empowering. Buying a book will help build hope in the hearts of the young people living in these areas, Maria V. Montelibano, MVM chairman enthusiastically told our group. “I believe that having pages to turn and touch, sharing books with friends as gifts are traditions that enrich our culture.  A strong readership base can help raise strong leaders for the future! And while there is also value to digital copies, the experience of having hard copies is priceless and lasting,” stressed Gawad Kalinga’s Louie Oquinena and Miguel Mercado. (Photo by Kert Navasero) Welcome to the year of the Earth Dog! On Feb. 16, Chinese New Year will be celebrated here and while there are feng shui predictions in a special supplement of this paper edited by our colleague Jullie Yap Daza, we went and listened to our favorite geomancer, Princesse Lim Fernandez one early afternoon. This talk was after a cozy Italian lunch in a resto in the LRI Design Plaza. LRI Design Plaza is such a pleasant little mall of small shops filled with one-of-a-kind designer furniture pieces and accessories. If I were fixing up my house I would most definitely go to LRI and consult the designers there. It was also a delight to have lunch at I Trully, which is owned by lawyer-artist Gail Atienza and her Italian gentleman business partner. The food is authentic and delicious and the presentation so artistic and appealing. Their hand-crafted furnishings, bags, and shoes are to die for, too. Tony Lo, the man behind the LRI Design Plaza hosted us and we had fun with the small group, which included Princesse and her mom. It was a chance to catch up with Tessie Ang Sy anti-crime activist. Thank you Tony for putting together the lecture of Princess every year! We have known Princesse for some years now and find this Ateneo Management Engineering graduate not only charming, but she dishes out accurate and practical good vibes and harmony tips. Her varied research and training in feng shui is impeccable and has helped many architects, designers, homeowners, and developers.  Her shop-office now is at the New World Hotel in Makati. It’s the year of the Earth Dog so it’s nice to find out good tips if you are to expand your business, go travel, look for romance, or want to have a healthy and prosperous year ahead (And please remember to take good care of your dogs this year). Me, I got confirmation that I indeed am a Golden Dragon (according to my birth year) and Princesse was right, I had a wobbly year but should be enjoying better health this year, thanks for the positive vibes!
