US, PH Coast Guards conclude maritime training course

Instructors from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) have just concluded their Small Boat Operations training course involving 16 Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) members aimed at enhancing maritime law enforcement capability in the Philippines.

Conducted from November 16 to December 11, 2020, the event marked the second phase in a “train the trainers” course series to develop PCG instructors who will manage small boat operations training for their unit in the future.

The US Embassy in Manila said this was the first training event conducted by USCG in the Philippines since the onset of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic.

In 2021, the USCG will bring more advanced instruction for the same instructor candidates to complete their course.

In presiding over the closing ceremony for the 25-day course, Commodore Allan Victor Dela Vega, PCG Surface Support Force Commander expressed appreciation for the US training and other sets of training planned for next year.

US Embassy Director for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Kelia Cummins thanked the PCG Commandant and senior PCG leadership for their support and advocacy, which allowed the training to advance despite the challenges presented by COVID-19 and the response efforts to the recent series of typhoons that battered the Philippines.
