Grab urges LTFRB to maximize TNVS slots ahead of increasing demand

By Alexandria San Juan Ride-hailing firm Grab Philippines has urged transport regulators to maximize the 65,000 slots for transport network vehicle service (TNVS) units to serve the more than 5 million passenger bookings expected beginning next month. "Our main goal of urging the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to maximize the current supply cap is for us to be able to service the ride-hailing passengers more effectively," Grab Philippines President Brian Cu said in a press conference in Makati City on Wednesday. According to Cu, Grab hopes to avoid difficulties in booking GrabCar, similar to what happened during last year's Christmas rush, due to an increase of passenger demand amid low car supply. "This call aims to proactively address a looming commuter pain point similar to that experienced last December 2019, when there were around 3 million booking requests to be served by a scarce supply of 35,000 TNVS drivers, which leads to many commuters waiting for hours to be allocated a ride, or worse, left stranded during the holidays," the ride-sharing company explained. Apart from this, Cu added that the firm is pushing the LTFRB to maximize the TNVS slots in a bid to replace thousands of drivers who churned out. "As of February 2020, Grab Philippines has determined to have at most 33,000 active drivers in its platform -- a 2,000 reduction from its 35,000 active driver count last December 2019," he said. Grab said a decline in active TNVS drivers in the past year was observed, which may be attributed to natural causes including a "decline in income due to traffic and increase in the price of petroleum, and other personal reasons." "We want our regulators, driver-partners, and passengers to be more prepared, and we will continue to work closely with the government by providing them with sound and reasonable insights," the Grab president explained. "We hope that these insights and findings would enable them to form informed decisions on policies, especially those affecting the welfare of both our commuters and driver-partners."
