Pichay re-elected NCFP prexy, eyes more GMs

Prospero Pichay Jr. (MB photo | KJ Rosales)The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) eyes to strengthen its program of producing more Grandmasters this year after Butch Pichay earned a fresh mandate as President of the National Sports Association. The Surigao Del Sur Congressman was re-elected for his fourth term during Tuesday’s general assembly at the Golden Bay Restaurant in Pasay City attended by 28 active club and organization members. Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Vice President Jeff Tamayo acted as an observer where Tagaytay Congressman Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino was also elected as Secretary General. “We will continue with our quest (of producing Grandmasters) by focusing on helping our young players earn more rankings by sending them to different tournaments,” said Pichay. At presstime, there are 13 active Grandmasters representing the Philippines excluding Cavite-born Wesley So, who is now playing for the United States. Other elected officials were Jonathan Amon (Vice President for Luzon), Neri Colmenares (Vice President for Visayas), Cezar Tan Jr. (Vice President for Mindanao), lawyer Cliburn Anthony Orbe (Treasurer) and Judge Gonzalo Mapili (Auditor). Acting as members of the Commission on Elections along with Tamayo were Grandmaster Eugene Torre, Mike Malapitan and Red Dumuk.
