5,000 emergency jobs allocated by DOLE to every province in Bicol region

The labor department is allocating 5,000 slots for emergency employment for each province in Bicol region, one of the areas hardest hit by Super Typhoon "Rolly."

"There will be 5,000 beneficiaries per province in the whole of Region 5," Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said in an online forum Wednesday.

He said these are for Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, Masbate, Camarines Norte, and Sorsogon.

Bello said around P180 to P200 million budget is needed to finance the emergency employment program in the Bicol Region.

The funds, he said, will come from the "Bayanihan to Recover As One Act".

"That is for COVID-19-affected workers. But any emergency situation will also justify our giving emergency work to our infomal workers. What is important is our informal workers were displaced," said Bello.

"We are really prepared to let them start working. Probably by Friday, they will start already," he added.

The labor chief said they are also allocating funds for the emergency employment in CALABARZON and MIMAROPA which were also affected by the typhoon.

The Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) is a short-term emergency employment program of the Department of Labor and Employment to mitigate the impact of calamities, disasters and epidemics on workers in the informal economy
