Bermaz Auto Philippines, exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles in the country, offered a glimpse into Mazda’s plans for 2019 with a reveal of their all-new Mazda3. First shown at the LA Auto Show last November, Mazda’s preview showcased both sedan and hatchback versions of the new sedan, both featuring Mazda’s evolving KODO design language. We first saw Mazda’s Vision Coupe concept at the last Tokyo Motor Show, emphasizing a design language that focused on the play between light and shadow – a design characteristic very much present in the two Mazda3 models. The all-new Mazda3 features a rounder, sleeker design than its predecessor. The front fascia features an evolution of its previous design with a larger front grille, sharper LED headlights, and a low-slung front bumper. In the rear, it gets a new set of taillights, along with a redesigned tailgate and rear bumper that further highlight its sportier nature. The bolder-looking rear quarters show off the car’s rounder look compared to before. Finally, 18-inch alloy wheels serve as the finishing touch. The Mazda3’s interior evokes the same minimalism that Mazda’s designers have strived to achieve on the outside. Evolving the “Jinba-Ittai” or “Horse and Rider are One” philosophy even further, Mazda has made their Mazda3 even more driver-centric. Among the improvements are a wider range of steering adjustments, a higher-placed shifter, more supportive seats, and easier-to-reach controls. The MZD Connect 8.8-inch floating infotainment touchscreen has also been upgraded, together with new software. The command knob itself has also been relocated to make it easier for the driver to control. Mazda’s premium push also sees the Mazda 3 getting new, more upscale materials used in the cabin. The 2019 Mazda3 is underpinned by Mazda’s new Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture, which improves handling, stability, and comfort for all occupants. And while we don’t see Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X engine yet, we will most certainly get Mazda’s upgraded Skyactiv-G gasoline engine which delivers improvements across the board, including better power, greater fuel economy, and a reduced carbon footprint. Mazda has not specified if the SkyActiv-X powertrain, which debuted with the new Mazda3 in the US, will be made available when Mazda officially launches the all-new model. Mazda has yet to reveal the final specifications and pricing we’ll be getting when the Mazda3 finally launches, but this is a great sign of things to come. Text and photos by Chris Van Hoven
