PISTON bewails jeepney drivers' non-receipt of 1st wave of gov't financial assistance

Transport group PISTON on Wednesday said many jeepney drivers have yet to receive financial assistance from the government since the country was placed under lockdown in March.

Mody Floranda, PISTON national president, said most jeepney drivers had difficulty in claiming their cash assistance under the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (Bayanihan 1).

“Ang malaking problema dito ay yung maraming proceso masyado na dinadaanan ang mga drivers at mga operators para makuha yung sinasabing ayuda (The big problem here is that drivers have to undergo many processes just to get their financial aid),” Floranda told DZMM.

Floranda said drivers had to go back and forth to multiple government agencies such as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Social and Welfare Development (DSWD), and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) just to apply for financial assistance.

“Kaya’t hanggang sa ngayon yung unang ayuda na sinasabi ng administrasyon ay malaking bahagi pa ng sekto ng transportasyon and di nakakatanggap dahil nagkalito- lito po, di po maindithan kung ano po ang gagawin (That's why until now, a huge number of the transportation sector has yet to receive the aid from the first tranche of financial assistance),” Floranda said.

The PISTON leader urged the government to make the claiming process easier for the drivers and make sure that all sectors of transportation, not just jeepney drivers, are given assistance.

PISTON said 27,937 traditional jeepneys are now back on the road. However, the income of jeepney drivers remains low due to fewer passengers.
