BACOLOD CITY - The Department of Education (DepEd) here is looking into the reported maltreatment suffered by an English teacher in the hands of her student in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
Department of Education (MANILA BULLETIN)
Based on the sworn affidavit executed by 23-year-old Kristel Anne Valencia before the City Prosecutor’s Office, her 16-year-old student, who is the grandson of the school’s teacher-in-charge (TIC), allegedly sent disturbing messages to her via social media, prompting her to forward it to their chat group on Facebook to inform other teachers, including the TIC.
Upon learning about the incident, the TIC talked to her over the phone and advised her to talk to the said student to settle the dispute.
Valencia then talked to the student at the principal’s office on February 26, and asked him his reason for sending the disturbing messages, but he denied, claiming it was not him.
She also asked him about previous mistakes but he reportedly got mad and told her why he was unfairly being blamed for everything.
Valencia said the student, whose name was withheld, then allegedly hit her on the head, pulled her hair, and pushed her to the sofa which caused injuries on her. She asked help from her co-teachers as they were both pacified.
She also said that the student’s mother, who was also a teacher, came in and allegedly asked her: “What hurtful words did you tell my son? Why would you want him to admit the mistakes he did not do?”
Valencia also said that the student’s mother allegedly threatened her that she will file a complaint against her.
Valencia reported the incident to the police that day.
She also stated in her affidavit that the student was habitually involved in trouble in the school, and also reportedly assaulted teachers, as per school guidance records.
According to Bernie Libo-on, assistant schools division superintendent in the city, Valencia was transferred to the main campus to lessen her trauma about the incident, while the student was placed on a two-week modular study at home while investigation was ongoing.
Libo-on said the student WAS allegedly undergoing treatment due to a psychological problem.
He said the TIC was attending a seminar when the incident happened. He will also talk to her and the student’s parents to address the concern.
