Malacañang said the presentation of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle in Vatican validated President Duterte's ongoing criticisms against the Catholic Church.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo
(OPS / MANILA BULLETIN) Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the statement after Tagle said during the historic Vatican Meeting, "The Protection of Minors in the Church," spoke about the the need for pastors to know and feel the pain of abuse victims and heal their wounds. Tagle, who opened the unprecedented three-day meeting, said that the abuse of minors by ordained ministers has inflicted wounds not only on the victims but also on their families, the clergy, the Church, the wider society, the perpetrators themselves and the Bishops. "We humbly and sorrowfully admit, that wounds have been inflicted by us bishops on victims and in fact the entire body of Christ," Tagle said. In a statement, Panelo welcomed Tagle's speech, saying that it is a notable step in raising awareness about the abuse being committed by the members of the clergy. "We view the presentation of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle during the historic Vatican Meeting, 'The Protection of Minors in the Church,' as a significant undertaking in raising awareness on child abuse committed by the members of the clergy," he said Friday. "This is a common theme of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s speeches and a validation of his running criticism on the men of the cloth," he added. The Palace official said that recognizing the misdeeds of the past by some members of the clergy is a humbling and painful admission on the venerable Roman Catholic Church which he said is known for its culture of self-denial and secrecy. "Cardinal Tagle’s pained admission on the clergy's long kept secret abomination is part of the wrenching and cleansing process that the Church is undergoing," Panelo said. Panelo expressed confidence that Pope Francis will be able to direct the Church to the correct path. "As the Holy Father conceded, concrete and effective measures are needed to address this issue," he said. "We remain confident that with Pope Francis at the helm, whose pontificate brought a surge of energy and fresh air into the life of the Roman Catholic Church, the spirit of reform will continue unhampered to further cleanse and rejuvenate the Church," he added. In his remarks, Tagle said that the bishops' lack of response to the suffering of victims, and efforts to reject and covering up the scandals has injured the people and left a deep wound in the Church's relationship with the worshipers. President Duterte has been releasing tirades against the Catholic Church as the latter criticized his policies, particularly the drug war. Duterte also repeatedly claimed that at least 80 percent of the members of the clergy are homosexuals. Meanwhile, Malacañang earlier said that it is not offended after Pope Francis said that those who repeatedly criticize the Church without love are friends, cousins, and relatives of the Devil.
