Gov't urged to provide subsidy to fishers, farmers

A fishers' group on Wednesday, May 5, urged the Department of Agriculture (DA) to provide subsidy to local goods producers to ensure stable supply of agricultural and fishery products in the country.

Reacting to DA's request to farmers and fishers to supply their products in Metro Manila amid the planned "food holiday" by some local producers, Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA) called on the government to provide a livelihood support to farmers and fishers to help them "keep up with the wheels of production."

"It is not enough that the DA would only verbally encourage farmers and fishers to constantly supply the metro with their products when the food producers themselves suffer the hardships in their production," PAMALAKAYA National Chairperson Fernando Hicap said.

The group also demanded the DA to directly procure the fishery and agricultural products of fishers and farmers "at equitable prices" to replace the production cost.

"Transport of products from coastal and farming communities under the current community quarantine status is still limited. It should be the government's responsibility to ensure that food products must be equitably procured from the producers and delivered at a reasonable price to consumers," Hicap said.

Hicap likewise urged the Congress to pass the House Bill 9192 which seeks to provide financial subsidy and production support worth P15,000 to fishermen in the country.
