Ma. Ivy Avelino, head teacher, said that their school's vegetable garden and tilapia production have helped in sustaining the nutrition program for their 142 pupils. “We are maintaining the productivity of the projects with the help of the parents, local government unit (LGU), and the community in order to be self-sufficient in food,” she said.
On Tuesday (September 4), representatives from the office of the Thai princess returned to Banayon Elementary School to monitor the progress of their livelihood and nutrition projects.
Ronelo Al Firmo, Leyte schools’ division superintendent, said that the assistance provided by the Thai princess and the Royal Thai Embassy after it was hit by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 is a big help for the school to augment its school-based programs and projects.
Aside from donating a school building, which was personally inaugurated by the Thai royal in 2016, she also gave P200,000 for the school’s health and nutrition program such as vegetable farming, mushroom production, livestock and tilapia raising.
Cebu-based CP Foods Thai agribusiness company also provided technical assistance to the school in order to ensure the productivity of their tilapia fingerlings.
The Thai royal official's representatives asked the school head to sustain their projects for the future of their pupils and community.
