P5M worth of marijuana seized in Subic

By Jonas Reyes SUBIC TOWN, ZAMBALES – Marijuana plants worth P5 million were nabbed by the Zambales Provincial Police Office (ZPPO) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Region 3 (PDEA 3) at a residence at the Magdalena Homes early Friday morning here. (Jonas Reyes / MANILA BULLETIN) British national Simon Stuart McLaren Watson, 42, and his Filipina live-in partner Rizza Fernandez, 28, were found to have been cultivating the plants, according to Zambales Provincial Police Office Director (ZPPO) Sr. Supt. Felix Astero Verbo Jr. Verbo said authorities were able to seize around 70 pots of Kust, estimated to be worth P56 million. Kush is a strain of Cannabis indica, and is a landrace plant mainly cultivated in Afghanistan, Northern Pakistan and North-Western India with the name coming from the Hindu Kush mountain range. Fernandez explained that the plants were for personal use since Watson had asthma and was still recuperating from a spine injury sustained two years ago. But the Mindoro Occidental native denied that she was using the plant. Mayor Jay Khonghun lauded the drug-bust operation and hoped that Subic will reach a drug-free status in the next few years.
